Technical fabrics like performance softshells, premium fleeces, gilets and sublimated jerseys — the quality bar for the garment itself is high, and your customer will expect it. And yet, when it comes to the transfer that carries the brand, the logo, the identity of the end customer, too many decorators are reaching for the cheapest option. That option, increasingly, is DTF.
Direct to Film transfers have undeniably lowered the barrier to entry for garment decoration. Quick to produce, low minimum orders, large gang sheets — on the surface, DTF looks like a no-brainer. But scratch beneath the surface, and the cracks begin to show. Literally.
The hidden cost of going cheap
DTF transfers are produced using a single, one-size-fits-all process. That means a transfer designed for a cotton T-shirt is the same transfer being pressed onto a technical softshell or a performance fabric — fabrics that behave very differently under heat and in the wash.
Consider a premium softshell jacket retailing at £80 or more. The transfer that goes on it might have cost 8p. That jacket has now cost your customer £80.08 — plus your overheads for pressing, packaging and delivery. And if that transfer cracks, fades, migrates or delaminates before the garment reaches the end of its useful life, the cost isn't measured in pence. Premium fabrics demand premium transfers.
